Marija and ShadowsTalk – “Nothing Is So Then What”

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to 1983. This is a time of sweet rock, when guitars were wailing, Quiet Riot was considered heavy, and women could front a band without being lame. It’s also a time that continues to inspire rockers across the globe, and lucky for us there is a singer and a band who embody everything good about ’80s rock. Introducing the lovely and talented Marija and ShadowsTalk.

Based in Calgary, Marija is a versatile, passionate, and inspiring artist with a worldwide fan base and a huge reputation for energy and talent. Her recent EP Nothing Is So Then What, recorded with her band ShadowsTalk and produced by the incredible and world-renowned rock producer Michael Wagener (Ozzy, Metallica, Skid Row), showcases everything that makes her a star. She’s a true powerhouse, and each of the five songs on EP brings fire, emotion, and timeless songwriting talent, qualities that will absolutely blow you away.

The production quality of Nothing Is So Then What is obvious. Every aspect of the EP – vocals, guitars, percussion – is rich and perfectly mixed, giving the tracks the attention they deserve and a complete boost of professionalism and care. While mixed well, though, Marija’s vocals stand out above all. The tone of her voice is gorgeous, and she shows incredible (and authentic) emotion as she sings her heart out. Take “Think!”, for example: you can hear the emotion that went into writing this song as she sings each line, and with gentle and forlorn guitar rounding out the sound, it’s a song that easily brings out strong emotions. At the same time, tracks like “Sickest Thing” and “Alive and Wired” bring out something completely different, offering a glimpse of diversity and well-rounded writing ability. It’s this latter song, “Alive and Wired”, that suggests a real ’80s influence, bringing out some screaming guitar licks and solos, vocals like Pat Benatar, and lines like, ‘Let me light your fire/I am alive and wired’. This ’80s feeling is fantastic and gives a real nostalgic but everlasting quality.

Along with Pat Benatar, Marija’s sound can also be compared to artists like Alannah Myles, Janis Joplin, and Sass Jordan, while the band itself shows hints of some classic and heavier rock influences. It definitely has that old-school sound, and it’s lucky the retro sound has a seemingly permanent home in most record collections. It would be interesting to hear the mixture of songs on a full-length album, to gauge Marija’s full range of talents and song-writing diversity.

Marija and ShadowsTalk are well-known for the energy they bring to the stage, and with incredible fans to feed their energy, there is no end to the reputation they’ve achieved for their performances. Anyone wanting to check out their act should get to the In Our Blood festival, held June 1-3 in Strathmore and featuring some of the top indie bands in Canada. Marija promises a show that will blow you away, and the energy and talent shown in the EP make it easy to believe her.
