Highlights:

  • Debut album released in 2011 & currently recording and mixing a new album for a 2012 release

  • Chosen to perform at 2012 Canadian Music Fest in Toronto (March 21-25)

“Fur Eel”: A play on words that might suggest a hairy sea creature or a response you’d hear from a young adult engaged in a conversation involving something unbelievable. “For Real?”

This funk band from Regina will definitely leave you thinking, “For Real?” as you bob your head and tap your feet along to their music. After the show, it will take you days to get the catchy lyrics, “Who am I writing 4 for…for?” out of your head.

The band Fur Eel formed in the summer of 2010 after Justin and Thomas wrote the song “I See”. Taking from each band member’s eclectic music tastes, Fur Eel delivers a sexy stage presence reminiscent of the biggest 80′s pop stars combined with the classic rock guitar riffs and solos comparable to your favorite hits, layered over top of grooving drums and bass that will get your feet tapping and your hips swaying.

Justin, the lead singer, is strongly influenced and inspired by Prince and it shows in his on-stage dancing swagger and deliverance of lyrics. Each word is punctuated, accentuated, and delivered with specific tone and pitch and followed up with precise and melodic finger-picked solos.

Indie403 had a chance to sit down with the lads in Fur Eel and talk all things furry prior to their set at The Ironwood on January 3rd, 2012.

Thomas St. Onge: “There are not a lot of people doing what we’re doing in Regina. Most people our age are doing the Indie rock stuff and the generation ahead of us is playing a lot of country music. Most of the venues in Regina are well attended though, so you get a lot of support throughout the scene.”

Currently working on their second album with an anticipated release in the spring of 2012, Fur Eel prides itself as a fully functional DIY Band. The albums are self-produced with the help of Thomas’s father, who primarily takes on the mixing aspect of the album production.

“We’ve been doing it all ourselves. We’ve never tried to tour before, put out an album…it’s been a learning process and we’re having a lot of fun with it”.
~Justin Sheppard – Fur Eel

Justin Sheppard: “We honestly have super supportive families. It makes all the difference to have their support. Thomas’s dad helps us with the mixes amongst other stuff, James’s parents lent us their van to drive out on our last mini-tour, Travis’s dad is at pretty much any show he can make it to, including a few shows in Winnipeg and Saskatoon, and my mom helps us out with the business side of being a working band. A lot of bands don’t get that kind of support base in their family.”

“Fur Eel is not just about performance and entertainment…they are musical magicians. They own their instruments as well as the stage”.
~Indie403

Fur Eel just returned home from a mini-tour that saw them play in Calgary, Regina, Brandon and Winnipeg, with a video and interview session in Saskatoon for an episode of Stripped Down. They hit the road again in February for a week and will be returning to Calgary to funk up The Distillery on February 18th, followed up by a month long cross-Canada tour in May.

Be sure to watch for Fur Eel at this year’s Canadian Music Fest in Toronto from March 21st-25th. Music fans at the Toronto festival will soon know who funk’d up The Prairies.

Fun Fur-ry Fact:
The Leader Post, Regina’s most subscribed newspaper, recently had an article that featured top choices in music from 2011 and Fur Eel was one of Mike Shiplack‘s selections. The rest of the selections are listed here.

Open Air – “All My Queens”

Stuck in traffic on the long drive home from work, it’s easy to become trapped in a steel cage of road rage and frustration. The music on the radio doesn’t help. Adele? Rihanna? Please. What you need is something fast, something rockin’, something awesome. Bring on Open Air.

Based in Calgary, Open Air is a pump-you-up, hold-nothing-back kind of rock band. Their 2011 release “All My Queens” has exactly the “in-yo-face” energy needed for rush hour hell, and this album is damn good. Six tracks of good time rock fly by, eliciting rock-on devil horns and the occasional “Yeeeaah!” as the album carefully treads the fine line between cheese and gravy, super fun but still legitimately awesome. It’s so modernly old-school – a 2011 version of Iron Maiden or KISS with some extra aggression and energy for good measure.

The songs are all well-written and well-played, giving an unexpected look at rock done right. They’re not overly complicated or technical songs, but the cheerful simplicity of these tracks is what makes them so great. Take “Make Our Own Luck”, for example: Guitars are rich and clean, drumming is totally solid, and everything about the vocals is amazing. The singing, screaming, Dave Grohl-ish voice of lead vocalist Steven Mansfield complements each instrumental layer of the album and makes this an unforgettable experience. It might have something to do with the mixing, too – the album sounds good enough to blow your mind, but still pure and unedited. You will die to hear this band play on stage and judging from the energy on the album, they must put on one hell of a show.

There is no such thing as a ‘best track’ on this album.  Everything is great, and to get a real taste of the band’s sound, you have to listen to everything. Check out their MySpace page for some delicious samples, but then get your ass out there to buy the EP. For info on shows, news, pics and propositions, go on and like their Facebook page and follow them obsessively. Next time you’re stuck in traffic, pop in some Open Air, and raise those devil horns high. Yeeaaaah!

Marine Dreams – “Marine Dreams”

The independent music world is a beautiful community. We see a lot of crossover, collaboration, and side projects, and familiar faces make their way across the map to create new sounds and adventures in music. Marine Dreams is the new project of former Attack In Black bassist Ian Kehoe, and his self-titled album is creating a stir across Canada. Released November 2011 on You’ve Changed Records, “Marine Dreams” mixes the old and new with  classic song writing, modern reverb, and some unexpected arrangements, a combination that gives Marine Dreams a completely recognizable sound. The source of toe-tapping, head-nodding, and girlish squeals the music world over, it is an album that introduces a different type of sound and a very talented songwriter.

Stylistically, Marine Dreams falls into the same category as Guided By Voices and Joel Plaskett, with some elements of Attack In Black and Yukon Blonde. The ten-track album is an echoey, reverb-filled and happy adventure through the looking glass, a look back at some traditional elements of rock with a modern twist. Song after song, he maintains the same mellow and dreamlike quality, a completely earnest attempt at creating something natural and honest. The vocals aren’t flawless, but the songs are better this way. His voice is perfect for the sound he is aiming for and successfully creates: a guitar-driven, poppy and everyman approach to sincere and unpolished indie rock.

The closest description that comes to mind is that of a bathroom jam. Much of the album has the echo of music bouncing off linoleum, a quality that almost makes us feel we’re intruding on a private moment of inspiration. “I Can Laugh” is an example. Close your eyes and you could swear you’re standing in a public washroom, the distorted guitar mixing with Kehoe’s vocals to create a strangely intimate experience. This is by no means a bad thing: the sound is personal, inviting, and imperfect, and listening to the album you feel that you are part of a special experience, one that is even more fantastic live.

“Marine Dreams” is a welcome addition to the ever-expanding Canadian indie scene. Pick up the digital album at You’ve Changed Records, and go check out some MySpace and Facebook action for the latest on his touring schedule and new releases. He’s a cool guy, this is a great album, and if you like guitar rock, you will love Marine Dreams. Go enjoy.
